Media Information for The Marlene Project

In 2017, ElektroCouture took up a mission to create the vision of a dress dreamt by Marlene Dietrich. In her letters, she talked and envisioned a dress that was glowing and interactive. Unfortunately, the technology at the time did not allow her to see these wishes fulfilled.

The dress required a combination of new technology and traditional handiwork. In addition to working with tulle and embroidery, the dress leverages 3D printing and laser cutting and includes 151 LEDs, 313 flowers and 2371 specifically developed crystals from Swarovski. The dress glows in various patterns to match Dietrich’s different songs.

The story and production of Marlene Dietrich’s dress was filmed by the production company CO2 Berlin. The screening on ARTE was on May 7th, 2017. The official documentary has been screened on ARTE MediaThek and you can watch the movie on the right or on Deutsche Welle.

Google Arts & Culture inducted the glowing Marlene dress into their online collection in February 2019 marking it the first contemporary FashionTech piece to be added into their archives.

Since creation, Marlene’s dress has been featured in ForbesModeLabDeutsche WelleVodafone, and many other publications.
