THE SINGE COAT

By Laura Hughes & Bianca Cheng CostaNzo X Plastic Logic

THE DESIGNER

Bianca Cheng Costanzo is a former Apple designer and a veteran of the MIT Media Lab who explores the integration of the digital into our daily lives. Born in São Paulo, Brazil to a Chinese mother and Italian father, she has lived and worked all over the world and now calls Berlin home. Laura Hughes is a contemporary fashion designer; originally from the mountains of Virginia, she moved to Chicago for design studies and is now living in Berlin. Her sculptural creations are concept-driven and explore how clothing influences the way we perceive ourselves and others.

THE CONCEPT

The Singe Coat is a reaction to modern conspicuous consumption. The E-ink flame animations in the pockets are a vivid reference to the idiom “burning a hole in your pocket”, which points to the impatient and frivolous spending. Made using low-power, paper-like E-ink displays that are now being developed for the ready-to-wear market, the coat is a synergy between conceptual design and the latest technology.

THE TECHNOLOGY

It employs an ultra-thin, lightweight, and glass-free flexible E-ink display manufactured by Plastic Logic Germany. The wearable display platform integrated into the coat was developed by TEN Electronics, a Moscow-based company focused on low-energy solutions in the field of flexible electronics for both professional and consumer markets.
