As a part of our Designer in Residence program, we met an engineer and fashion tech designer Lina Wassong. Lina seeks innovative ways of digitalizing the environment and the human body, always questioning how we will seamlessly connect and communicate with electronic components in the future.

Lina also encourages people to learn about electronics and programming. She teaches workshops and gives tutorials to help make science and electronic components more approachable. She has co-written O’Reilly book “Wearables mit Arduino und Raspberry Pi” about light, electronics and programming and is currently working on a second book about wearables and e-textiles.

Most of the time, we associate the digitalization of our society as a detachment from nature. However, Like us, Lina Wassong believes technology can accentuate the beauty of mother nature. Here we’re showing in this collaboration how technology can also be used to emphasize the beauty of nature around us.

Tiny lights twinkle like fireflies, with soft sounds of the woods create an idyllic atmosphere reminiscent of a forest glade at dusk. The AMBIENCE skirt has 24 integrated lights connected to a small micro-controller. The tiny LEDs light up and fade out in a random intermittent pattern. Two audio speakers integrated within the skirt’s lining play recorded sounds of a river, wind blowing through trees, and animals at night.
